Q&A with Ben Barnicoat

The CIK-FIA KF European Championship will see Ben Barnicoat join Jordon Lennox-Lamb in Birel ART’s line-up.
Class of 1996, the Racing Steps Foundation car driver holds an important karting palmares: 2012 CIK-FIA European Champion, 2013 WSK Super Master Series Vice-Champion and third place finisher in the 2013 WSK Euro Series.
Barnicoat debuted on cars last year and immediately triumphed in the F. Renault 2.0 NEC and the F. Renault 2.0 UK BARC Winter Series. This year he is the number one title contender in the F. Renault 2.0 Eurocup and the ALPS.
Q: In February you raced for Birel ART in the Lonato Winter Cup and placed fifth. What did it feel like to be back on karts?
A: “I think my return to international kart racing went much better than anyone expected: we kept in the top 3 all weekend and deserved to close much higher than fifth.”
Q: Why did you decide to participate to the 2015 CIK-FIA KF Europeans?
A: “Birel ART was quite impressed with my performance at the Winter Cup, so they offered me the opportunity to represent them in the KF Europeans. I had a blast being back on karts, so I am thrilled to be competing again in the prestigious context of the CIK-FIA European Championship.”
Q: What are your expectations?
A: “Honestly, I don’t really know what to expect. In the Winter Cup we kept a fast pace, but other drivers have gone on to race the rest of the season and so they had a chance to improve, while I returned to cars. Even so, I am confident that we’ll be competitive and battling up front for victory!”.
Q: This year you debuted in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup in Aragon (Spain): pole position in the qualifyings and second in Race 1. How do you feel about this first half of the season?
A: “After a year in the NEC, I did very well in my first F. Renault Eurocup race. We were really fast and it showed: I made pole position in both qualifying sessions and conquered a podium finish and some serious points, which are key to aim for the title. During the pre-season tests in Aragon we had struggled to find the right pace, so it was fantastic to see how much progress we made. It was definitely a great season start!”
